Tony Alvarez
Americorps Program Director
Tony Alvarez is Breakthrough Silicon Valley's AmeriCorps Program Director. In this role, he leads BTSV's AmeriCorps program and most enjoys guiding the young adults that make up BTSV's AmeriCorps cohort as they work to reach their professional and academic goals.
As a first-generation college student, he attended CSU Stanislaus, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social sciences. After graduation, he served as an AmeriCorps member for two years through the Citizen Schools teaching fellowship. In this role, Tony was a mentor and provided academic support to middle school students in Redwood City. Tony then began his teaching career at a charter school in East San Jose, and next spent six years teaching 6th grade math at Summit: Denali Middle School.
Tony first joined the BTSV community in 2019 as an Instructional Coach and spent three additional summers as Dean of Faculty for BTSV's middle school summer programs before becoming AmeriCorps Program Director in 2023.
Outside of work, Tony enjoys cooking, hiking, traveling, road trips, coffee, and house plants.
